January 24, 1943: Adolf Hitler orders German troops in Stalingrad to fight to the death. He also ordered the incineration of Jewish patients, nurses and doctors at Auschwitz-Birkenau.


January 25, 1949: First Israeli Election of Prime Minister won by David Ben-Gurion.


January 26, 1942: First US Force in Europe during WWII go ashore in Northern Ireland.


January 27, 1943: First US air attack on Germany (Wilhelmshafen)


January 28, 1986: Space Shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, with all 7 crew members killed, including Christa McAuliffe who was to be the first teacher in space.


January 29, 1892: The Coca-Cola Company is incorporated in Atlanta, Georgia.


January 30, 1965: State funeral of Winston Churchill at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The world's largest ever state-funeral.
