Happy Birthday, Dear Mama

Updated: Feb 4, 2021

My mother, Bettie Rachel, was born 101 years ago today. A multitude of people in heaven are celebrating eternal life because she lived!

She weighed only 2 pounds and it is truly a miracle she survived to grow up! She was a mighty woman of God who touched lives everywhere she went! Oh the stories I have yet to tell!

Maybe if I write them I will not miss her so much. Meanwhile, I know she must be smiling down on me and on us all; the kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and now great-great-grandkids she adored and prayed for every day.

I bet she likes who we have become and who we are becoming!

She was my best friend, really truly. She respected me in a way I have never experienced with any other woman. Yes, respect. It matters to me as much as love and I learned self-respect borne in God's grace and promises, from her.

"Who can separate us from the love of God? I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Forgive others as your Heavenly Father forgives. Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth. BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!"

"Self-Respect," she said, "is not pride, but the absolute reality of who you are in Christ! This is a required spiritual strength which will keep you going against all judgment and criticism, fear and negativity, jealous slander, gossip and spiritual opposition."

I remember her strength and I am so very glad I have her Bible. I know she and Papa are dancing together in heaven. Happy Birthday Mama!

Luke and Sarah named Ruthie Bette after you. The kids are good. Life is truly blessed by God and all your prayers for us continue to be answered.

Miss you bad. When I grow up I want to be just like you.
